“Houseplants create a sense of harmony. The color green is the most soothing to the human eye; out of all the colors of the spectrum, it is the easiest for us to see. Houseplants give our eyes a place to pause and rest.” ~ Vicky Harper
If you were to ask me what I think is the #1 needed accessory in a room, I would say, “houseplants.” They bring life to the décor, are relatively inexpensive, add color and texture, and complement all decorating styles. Not only do they bring beauty, but the added health benefit of purifying the air, relieving stress, and reducing noise. The addition of plants can make a house feel more like home.
My mother is blessed with a green thumb. I have told her if she stuck a stick in the ground, it would take root. While I inherited a ‘somewhat green thumb,’ I still have to work at keeping my plants alive. Many people have told me they are not good with indoor plants. Am I okay with using faux? Only if they look real, not plastic. There are some pretty silks, and I love the preserved boxwood. If you do go that route, mix in a few real plants for a more natural look.
It’s actually pretty easy being green. With the help of a Google search, you can find information on what plants to buy for your home and how to care for them. Many plants take very little care and provide great benefits. Before buying, you will need to access the requirements for the plant’s environment and how your home can accommodate it. Such things as lighting (direct or indirect) and watering and feeding will need to be considered. Plants are living creatures and do require care.
Fiddle Leaf Fig – it’s a little fussy, but if you get its environment right, you’ll love its beauty.
Succulents – they look good in any container, are easy to care for and look great when three or so are used as a grouping.
ZZ plant – so easy to grow and is the perfect plant for the ‘brown’ thumb.
Air plants – unique and relatively easy to care for.
Indoor plants that are easy to grow (at one time or the other I have had these… and many are still making their home with me):
- Spider Plant
- English Ivy
- Snake Plant
- Chinese Evergreen
- Peace Lily
- Areca Palm
Places I like to browse and purchase plants: House of Plants (just off of Stratford Rd @507 Harvey St), Meyers Greenhouse on Hwy 158, Lowes Home Improvement and Home Depot.
It isn’t easy being green, but with a little knowledge, the right environment and care, your houseplants can thrive. Most importantly, they will add health and beauty to your home.
