Brooke Notes: The Publisher Perspective

I am loving all of this gorgeous spring weather we’re experiencing here in Winston-Salem. And while I try not to glorify being “busy,” I have to admit that I do love the buzz of all of the things going on this time of year – especially this year, as we emerge from a pandemic winter with our hopes and hearts ready to start anew. Speaking of busy, this issue is packed full of events and ideas for things to do. The Junior League of Winston-Salem is putting on their 15th Annual Tour of Fine Spaces, Second Harvest Food Bank is having their well-known Empty Bowls Event , LEAD Girls of NC (a non-profit near and dear to my heart) is hosting a LEAD-A-THON in early May and so much more. These events give me a feeling of optimism and promise, like we are on the road back to normalcy, and it feels good to help promote them. I hope you’ll consider supporting one or ALL of these with me.

Speaking of nice weather, we’re proud to bring you a brand-new column this month that introduces you to all the best spots to drink local. It’s the perfect kind of weather to venture outside for a nice cold beer, glass of wine or a refreshing cocktail. Be sure to read the kick-off article to this column on Dogwood Hops & Crops!

For the last several months, I’ve asked our team various questions and we’ve shared their responses. This month, I asked everyone to share their enneagram type! Do you know yours? Or have you even heard of the enneagram? I’m a sucker for things like this—I love learning about myself and my loved ones and utilizing that information for self-growth. If you haven’t heard about the enneagram, you can learn more about each of the nine types HERE and check out our team’s responses in our print issue! It’s interesting to see that nearly HALF of our team is the same type. I am a type 3—the Achiever. I can adjust who I need to be (a blessing and a curse), I have a drive to succeed at everything I do, I always have a running to-do list, I’m a people person and incredibly afraid of failure. There is a plethora of free quizzes you can take online to see which type you are. However, it takes some digging and research. You may not nail down your type on the first quiz you take.

Right before this issue went to print, my best friend unexpectedly lost her stepdad. They have always been close family friends and like extended family to me; my heart is breaking for them. I share this because I think we can all use the reminder that life is short. Cherish your time with your loved ones. Give them a hug. Tell them you love them whenever you can. Don’t wait for an unexpected death to be a reality check for you and how you are treating those around you. The other reminder here is when traumatic things like this happen, reach out. Send a text without expecting a response. Drop food on the front porch. Pray for them. It may seem like they ‘have it covered’ or have ‘plenty of help,’ but you can never have too much support from those around you during difficult times.

Wishing you a happy and healthy month of April—stay tuned for the upcoming issue of FW Engaged next month. In the meantime, if you or someone you know is recently engaged or married, email me an engagement or wedding photo for our Celebrations section! brooke@forsythmags.com
