Changes are all around us: in nature, our surroundings, ourselves. The weather is finally getting cooler, the kids are back in school, and maybe, just maybe, you can find some time for yourself.
I promised you tips and tricks that will help you make the most of your life and this month we’re looking at how to find simple pleasures in everyday moments.
It’s easy to find pleasure in big events: an amazing vacation, a wedding, graduation. But, what about the other 99.9% of your life? That’s where you spend most of your time anyway. Learning how to find sacred moments and simple pleasures in ordinary everyday life is the key to maximizing joy.
You can learn to make memorable moments in everyday life.
I enjoy spending time with my family, especially when it’s just a “normal” day. I love making our time together special. Life can get hectic, and there’s a lot to juggle, but it’s important to find ways you can connect with the people you love. Have dinner together as a family, go for a short walk or take thirty minutes to eat ice cream together and share the events of your day. It doesn’t matter what you do as long as you’re connecting and having fun together.
You can have magical moments in ordinary everyday life if you loosen up and commit to finding the time.
Don’t just go through the motions of your life. Really show up. Be present when you’re with your kids, family and friends. Listen when someone is talking to you. Pay attention. Hear what they’re saying. Make memories. Laugh with each other. Really talk.
Manage your technology.
Have you ever been with your family and noticed that everyone is on their cell phones? It happens to us, and I’m guessing you, too. Try to manage the amount of time you’re on your phone, especially when you’re with your kids. Put your phone on airplane mode, ignore the phone when it rings and focus on the people you’re with.
Appreciate all your blessings.
Be thankful for all you have: kids to drive around, clean up after and cook for. A messy home. A demanding job. Instead of focusing on what you must do, think about how lucky you are to have all of the wonderful blessings in your life. Remember, attitude is everything. Try to be positive, even when you have a sink full of dirty dishes to wash.
Just let go.
It’s easy to think about responsibilities and worry about what you have to do. Try to let go of worrying about the future or thinking about the past. Be present. All you really have is the moment you’re in. Live it.
I’ll let you in on a little secret. It’s in these ordinary moments, just the normal day to day life, that you can have an extraordinary connection with the people you love. But, only if you make it a priority. Start intentionally being more present when you’re with your friends and family and watch your connection deepen.
Block out time for yourself without feeling guilty about it.
Whenever I have a little time alone, even if it’s just thirty minutes, it makes a huge difference in how I interact with my family. I feel calmer, more centered and patient. Give yourself permission to have a little time each day, ditch the guilt and watch what happens.
Life isn’t perfect; that’s for sure. It’s messy and sometimes we have to be willing to get our hands dirty. There’s joy to be had, every single day of our lives if we take the time to find it. That’s what making the most of your crazy perfect life is all about.
