Diamond Shopping Tips

BY CONNIE SONG, Certified Gemologist Windsor Jewelers

Choosing a diamond ring is a big decision and a personal one.  Diamond jewelry, especially your engagement ring, will last a lifetime and should reflect your taste and personality, but before buying a diamond, you need to do a little research so you have an idea of what you want before you start shopping. Working with a GIA (Gemological Institute of America) Graduate Gemologist or trained jewelry store associate can guide you through the process, helping you understand all about diamonds.

The 4Cs describe a diamond’s core characteristics – its cut, color, clarity, and carat weight – and play a role in determining a diamond’s value. However, there is much more to a diamond’s value – and beauty – than just these four traits. With Forevermark diamonds that we feature at Windsor Jewelers, we go beyond the 4Cs.  Every Forevermark inscribed diamond comes with a promise that it is beautiful, rare and responsibly sourced. This promise is symbolized by the unique inscription at its heart. Forevermark individually selects diamonds against additional rigid criteria to ensure that only the most beautiful diamonds become Forevermark. This assurance comes from Forevermark’s exacting selection process that is so rigorous, less than 1% of the world’s diamonds can become Forevermark.

For most, shape is the top criterion in selecting a diamond, and everything else follows from there.  However, knowing your budget is key when shopping for a diamond. You should buy the best ring you can without going into major debt. Looking at a diamond in person is always your best option to help you find the most scintillating diamond that speaks to you. Nothing compares to being able to rotate a diamond and seeing the color and sparkle first hand.

When shopping for an engagement ring, it helps to have an idea of what style mounting you want. Halo settings are extremely popular, as is the classic 4 or 6 prong Tiffany setting; however, with the diversity of settings available, it still may be hard to choose the perfect one, and custom design may be the best option.  You can take pieces of different mountings that you like and combine it all in one, or describe your perfect ring to our custom designer and get an original ring that belongs to only you.
