For over 100 years, The Children’s Home has been a haven for young children who have been removed from their homes for various reasons. In 2016, The Children’s Home began a partnership with The Crossnore School, and last month, the two historic non-profits become one organization now called Crossnore School & Children’s Home. Many residents have questions about what these changes mean, one of the top ones being – how does this partnership affect my donations?
“This merger has been a great thing,” stated Senior Advancement Officer Brandon Cathey, “but both the Crossnore campus and the Winston-Salem campus have unique needs, and of course, local donors want their donations utilized in certain ways. There are several great ways to give.”
“We give the children who are served at Crossnore School & Children’s Home the same opportunities any parent or family would give their children,” said Brandon. “We take the kids to the movies, to restaurants, to theme parks. We give them normal experiences, but all of that costs money. Donations that help make seasonal activities possible are very appreciated.”
Some seasonal donations to consider include:
Bug spray • Sunscreen • Gift certificates to theaters, restaurants, water parks, ball games, etc. • Sunglasses • Floaties • Beach towels • Bathing suits for boys and girls • Gardening tools
“Very often, the children who arrive at Crossnore School & Children’s Home have been removed from their home very quickly. There may or may not have been time to collect personal belongings,” said Brandon. “Part of our mission is to help our children begin to establish a sense of ownership. Every child who arrives receives a pillow, bedding, and personal care items. Those items are theirs to keep – whether they leave to return to their homes within a month, or they age out of our program.”
Some bedding donations to consider include:
Twin size bed-in-a-bag • Pillows • Bath towels • Washcloths
PERSONAL CARE AND CLOTHING
“People have been incredibly generous during the holiday season,” said Brandon. “We have a great supply of socks, underwear, and toiletries at the moment. However, gift certificates for clothing are really helpful, especially since many of the children in our care are older. We like them to help choose clothes they like and will enjoy wearing.”
Some personal care and clothing items to consider include:
Gift certificates to Wal-Mart and Target • Gift certificates for haircuts and personal grooming • Spring and summer weight pajamas • Full sized toiletries, including shampoo, conditioner, soap, deodorant, and toothpaste
“Every donation is valuable,” shared Brandon. “Even a small, monthly donation makes a tremendous difference long-term. Cash donations help us cover cost-of-living expenses, including repairs, utilities, and more.” Monetary donations also help offset the cost of furnishing the homes where the children live.
Ways to give monetary donations:
Cash, checks, and credit cards are all accepted. Online giving is also an option. However, service charges are deducted from credit card and online donations. The best way to donate 100% to Crossnore School & Children’s Home is via check. Consider a regular monthly donation, annual giving, a gift in memory of a loved one, or in honor of that person who is so hard to buy for.
Crossnore School & Children’s Home is always eager to welcome volunteers! “We love to see church groups or work teams or civic clubs embrace the mission of Crossnore School & Children’s Home,” said Brandon. “It’s a great way to build internal teamwork while simultaneously supporting a good cause!”
