Ketchie Creek is somewhat of a legend in the Triad area. Many people know Ketchie Creek as the place to go for a delicious, breathtaking wedding cake, but that is just the beginning! In 2008, Gerald and Renna Welborn purchased the bakery from the original owners with plans for expansion.
“We have since grown the deli menu and the coffee menu, as well as our dessert/cake side,” said Renna. “We are surprised at how widespread we are known, how far people will drive to get our products, and the excellent reputation of fresh, made-from-scratch products we have. It is not unusual for someone to drive from Asheville, Raleigh, or even from out of state to get cakes from us. We have seen this continue to grow through the last seven years.”
Though the coffee shop and deli were created by the original owners, Gerald has taken a particular interest in the quality of the coffee Ketchie Creek serves. “Gerald has really taken a love for coffee and has changed our coffee menu to be the best around,” said Renna. “He reads daily about coffee and the processes, and ensures that we are serving a fresh, amazing product. He has added some of the best organic/fair trade coffees from around the world that are always very fresh and roasted in small batches. We still have our signature flavored roast (roasted in North Carolina) called Ketchie Creek Blend, as well as cold brewed iced coffee, frappes and smoothies. We also have a full espresso bar which serves lattes, cappuccinos, café mochas and all of your standard coffee house fare. We put a lot of care into making sure all of our drinks and ingredients are very high quality – down to our homemade whipped cream.”
Though Ketchie Creek is known for many things, many people are unaware of the fantastic patio outside of the deli. “I am amazed at how many customers still don’t know we have a deli, and it is a big part of our business,” said Renna. “I encourage anyone to drive out to Mocksville and have lunch on our patio! You won’t regret it! We have added sandwiches and salads that have become some of our best sellers. I love being in the kitchen and, any chance I get, I help on the deli line. The deli/coffee shop keeps our locals and cake customers happy daily, because if you come to get a cake, typically you will grab a cup of fresh coffee or lunch! I am a huge deli person – I love a good sandwich with a side, and I love to eat outside! We offer a cracked pepper turkey with lingonberry mayo and Havarti cheese, as well as homemade pimento cheese, a classic Reuben and homemade chicken salad. There are more than 20 sandwiches and almost as many salads and sides to choose from.”
Once you give the coffee and deli shop a try, you might just find yourself picking up a cake or other delectable dessert on your way out! With flavors including amaretto pound cake, Italian cream cake, double fudge Mounds cake and chocolate cheesecake to name a few, it’ll be a temptation you won’t be able to resist!
At Forsyth Magazines, we love indulging in Ketchie Creek’s spectacular muffins during our annual Consignment Shop Hop! “Ladies’ days are my favorite, and who wouldn’t love shopping with friends, eating great food and supporting local businesses,” said Renna. “My favorite muffin is our orange cranberry nut!” Other flavors include Granny Smith apple, blueberry, strawberry cream cheese, gingerbread and pumpkin.
True to form, the Welborns will always be looking for ways to bring the wonderful cakes, muffins, cookies, coffee and lunch made by Ketchie Creek to a larger group of people. “We would love to grow Ketchie Creek eventually,” said Renna. “We’d keep our main focus in Mocksville, and maybe have a satellite shop in Forsyth County somewhere! We have a busy small business here in Mocksville and two young daughters, so finding time to do things like this is hard…but one day!”
