Members at Homestead Hills, a retirement community in Winston-Salem, are continuing to live “The Weller Life” in 2021. ‘The Weller Life’ was trademarked by Homestead Hills’ parent company, Senior Living Communities, in 2010 as a way to promote the company’s impressive lifestyle. It is a lifestyle philosophy based around the seven dimensions of wellness (physical, emotional, intellectual, social, spiritual, environmental, and occupational wellness) and the associated principle of helping Members to live longer, healthier, happier lives. Together, these create ‘The Weller Life,’ and allow Members who live at Homestead Hills to improve their quality of life.
Traditionally, people think about “wellness” as a term for physical health only. The word invokes thoughts of gym routines, nutrition, weight management, blood pressure, etc. Wellness, however, is much more than physical health. It is a full integration of physical, mental and spiritual well-being. Providing social events, wellness classes, freshly prepared dining, and quality care services for Members creates a synergy that benefits the entire community.
From Independent Living through all levels of care (Assisted Living, Memory Care, Skilled Nursing, and Rehabilitation), a variety of activities and events are planned each day for Members to enjoy. Whether it’s an archery class, brain games, day trips, dining demonstrations, line dancing, a ladies night out, volunteer opportunities or much more, there’s something for everyone to enjoy. “Knowing your Members personally is so important for programming.” says Jennifer Brown, the Social Director at Homestead Hills. “Each Member is different, and they all have different interests. Finding the connections helps me create events that many will enjoy and it also pushes the envelope on what we can do!” And push the envelope, they do! Brown works closely with the community’s Wellness Director, Megan Isaacs and the Executive Chef, Michael Nasrallah to plan events that will encompass all three of their specialties.
The advent of the COVID-19 vaccination, and loosening of restrictions from Center for Disease Control (CDC) and State of North Carolina has allowed Homestead Hills to welcome back some of their larger events. This includes their monthly Signature Experience, an over-the-top themed day of fitness, food and fun. Each of the activities and dining experiences hosted throughout the day tie in with the theme. In July 2021, Members enjoyed “Summer Olympics” with events including an Opening Game Parade, Top Golf, Ping Pong/Archery/Billiard with medal ceremony, Olympic Trivia, and a movie showing of Miracle (based on the Miracle on Ice about the 1980 USA Olympic hockey team). To close out the day, community Members sat down for an exclusive ‘Olympic Chef’s Table’ Experience where Homestead Hills’ Executive Chef prepared a 5-course meal from 5 different countries! Previous Signature Experience themes at Homestead Hills include Arabian Nights, Old Hollywood, The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, and Winter Wonderland.
The team at Homestead Hills is resolute in fostering the dimension and the philosophy of wellness, fulfilling a promise to deliver an exceptional quality of life.
