Triad locals are familiar with DASH Beauty, one of Winston-Salem’s esteemed salons for bridal styling, hair color, and more. DASH Beauty owner Rachel Newsome and her partner in crime Macey Ford, an experienced color specialist, are excited to introduce Winston-Salem residents to Opal & Onyx Hair Co., a chic salon tailored to treat clients to luxury haircuts, color services, and extensions.

After getting to know each other while working together in the same industry, Rachel and Macey realized that their compatible personalities, yet starkly different temperaments, would blend nicely in their own four-chair salon. Together, they chose to embark on the journey of opening Opal & Onyx Hair Co., specializing in hair color, cuts, and extensions. Macey was the mastermind behind naming the salon Opal & Onyx, as she wanted the space to truly embody the personalities of its owners. Onyx was inspired by Macey’s darker and demure side, while Opal is a white gemstone much akin to Rachel’s bubbly and lighthearted nature.

Although it might seem that the pair’s stark differences are a recipe for disaster, the duo is dedicated to honestly and openly communicating with each other. “We’ve both learned throughout the years of working in different environments that speaking up prevents any unnecessary butting of heads,” explains Rachel. “We don’t want our space to be drama-filled and want clients and fellow employees to feel empowered to speak up.”

While Rachel and Macey are both color specialists, Macey’s focus is primarily on color and precision cutting, while Rachel recently perfected her craft in hair extensions. When making an appointment at Opal & Onyx, you can expect high-end services in an atmosphere that brings you relaxation, leaving you feeling pretty and pampered. All products sold in the salon are natural-based and paraben-free, with brands such as Olaplex, Oligo Professionnel, and Authentic Beauty Concept lining the shelves.

Thinking about getting hair extensions for the first time but not sure if you’re ready to take the leap? While there are many myths about the damaging nature of hair extensions, Rachel and Macey are adamant that hair extensions can actually help hair remain healthy and heal throughout its growing process as long as hair extensions are cared for and maintained properly. In fact, most Opal & Onyx clients use hair extensions in order to grow their hair healthy and long, and have seen major improvements in their hair since having extensions installed. Small steps such as using high-quality hair products and being gentle with your locks by sleeping in a silk cap or using a satin pillowcase can make all the difference in the longevity of your hair. Clients undergo a hair extension consultation at Opal & Onyx to determine which kind of extensions suit their hair best based on hair texture, density, and history.

Rachel and Macey want their clientele to trust their recommendations and have the best hair possible for the longest amount of time. Although the salon recently opened its doors in June, the pair is already looking to the future and hope to add to their team.
