In one of the most charming areas of Winston-Salem’s West End, you will find a place that exists for the sole purpose of making your life better! Sixth Sense Health & Wellness Center has been providing massage therapy, acupuncture, and nutrition counseling since 1997.

Yet it was right around 2001 when the owners, husband and wife team Nikki and Nike Roach, decided to take it up a notch! They recognized that massage therapy was becoming more widely accepted, and that more and more people were realizing its benefits, so they added massage therapists to their team. Also, around the early 2000s, they noticed an uptick in their client’s requests for acupuncture, and so that area of their business also increased. They further enhanced their services by adding key staff and moving into their current Brookstown Avenue location, which offers additional treatment rooms and plenty of room for their four massage therapists, two acupuncturists, and three front office managers.

Owner Nikki says, “We wanted to stand out and adding more acupuncture services, fitness training, and nutrition counseling was the way to go.” Being ahead of the trends and knowing the right time to add services seems to be a real gift shared by Jamaican native, Nikki, and her North Carolina native husband, Nike. (Pronounced Knee-Kay) “Acupuncture is really taking off!” said Nikki and she credits some of that to the pandemic and our desire to seek out new and different treatments for stress, anxiety, and body pain.

So, naturally I had to ask how Nikki and Nike met. Her answer began with the delightful sound of her infectious laugh as she told me how she was a travel agent and her future mother-in-law was a client. “I thought she was crazy,” is how Nikki described her reaction to learning that her client wanted to set her up with her only son! Crazy as a fox, apparently! Nikki and Nike have now been married for nearly 20 years, have three young sons between the ages of nine and 14, a pet bunny, and run a successful business together!

When asked how the business has managed to fare so well through the pandemic of 2020, Nikki gives credit to the support from the community and her loyal clients. Many clients of Sixth Sense participate in a program that provides them with a certain number of massages per month. The fact that regular clients continued their programs throughout the slower months was a great asset to seeing Sixth Sense through the worst of the pandemic.

With a twinkle in her eye, Nikki shared with me that there is also an upside to all the time people spent quarantining and stuck at home during 2020; requests for pre-natal massages are on the rise! And like they have done in the past, the team at Sixth Sense is ahead of the trend and happily accommodating those new clients while meeting the needs of their existing client base as well.
