By Carolyn S. Peterson with Shannon Kemp
Goodbye, summer. Hello, fall. The transition to a new season always brings a measure of excitement! We pack away the shorts, cute sundresses, and t-shirts of summer, in favor of the sweaters, denim, and boots of fall. While it’s an opportune time to clean out the closet, it’s a task many look to with dread. However, thanks to Style Encore, a premier clothing and accessory resale store in Winston-Salem, the transition of one wardrobe to another can be fun. Dare we even say…. easy? Especially if you take into account that the simple act of cleaning out one’s closet and driving to the conveniently located Style Encore, means cash on the spot for your gently used clothing, shoes, accessories, and handbags? Yes, please! And the ever-fabulous Shannon Kemp, owner of Style Encore, is ready to help.
Recycle Your Style and Personalize Your Shopping Experience!
Style Encore buys and sells gently used women’s clothing, shoes, accessories, and handbags. They accept and sell for all seasons, all day, every day – no appointment is ever necessary. Style Encore purchases a wide variety of women’s business and casual styles and brands, in sizes 0-4x, which have sold in retail stores in the last few years and are in excellent condition. On the shopping side, gently used items in the store are sold at 50-70% off of retail pricing, making it an affordable place to update your wardrobe without damaging your wallet.
Style Encore also purchases handbags and wallets, including designer lines such as Kate Spade, Michael Kors, and Coach, as well as fashion bags. The two large handbag walls in the store are a popular destination for many shoppers.
It’s also helpful that at Style Encore, personalized shopping is made easy. “We have found that for many women, fashion becomes about what they look good in and what makes them feel good about themselves,” notes Shannon. “But they aren’t always confident about choosing versatile pieces that will work well for their body shapes.”
“Our customers can make an appointment for free Personal Shopping, and with a short survey that identifies personal preferences and styles, our team will select outfits that match the shoppers’ wants, and advise them on the best ways to accessorize. We are able to prepare a full dressing room with a dedicated member of our team to swap styles or sizes as needed. It’s my favorite part of my job,” gushes Shannon. “Personal styling is a perfect way to enhance your wardrobe or just add a few pieces that you might not otherwise choose for yourself.”
A Career Transition
Shannon and her husband, Mike, owner of Play It Again Sports franchises in Winston-Salem and Greensboro, NC, were interested in bringing a new concept in women’s fashion to the Triad. They are the owners of the first Style Encore franchise in North Carolina, and 11th in the nation. Shannon stepped out of her comfort zone and successful career as a speech pathologist when she began this journey. “In my former career, I found joy by helping patients and their families recover from cancer, illness, or surgery. I was afraid that my role at Style Encore might not be as rewarding. However, I’ve been pleasantly surprised! It’s a different kind of rewarding, and often in the most unexpected ways!”
Shannon was drawn to make this career change because she was inspired by the fact that this brand is “by women, for women.” The foundation of the business model empowers not only the owners, but ultimately, the shoppers, which is something that deeply resonated with Shannon.
Since opening in May 2014, Shannon has enjoyed working with women who come to the store looking for a new outfit for a job interview or a whole new wardrobe for a promotion, or something to wear on a first date! “I love helping them find a fabulous look at a great price!” she shares.
Many customers who are on weight loss journeys find that shopping at Style Encore is the perfect place to keep their wallet lean as well. “They are able to purchase clothes in sizes they have not worn in a while, and we get to experience that excitement with them. As they return throughout the weight loss journey, we’re able to celebrate their success with them!” exclaims Shannon. “Connecting with women in our community and helping them find clothes that make them look and feel great is definitely satisfying!”
Balancing Franchise, Fashion, and Family
Shannon has not only discovered new things about herself through owning Style Encore, but has found that she and husband Mike are good partners at work, as well as at home. “I’ve always known we are a great team,” she states. “I wouldn’t have been able to move forward in this opportunity without my husband’s support and business experience.”
As a wife and mother to three kids, Shannon is a busy woman! She works hard to strike a balance. The house rule is that the phone and computer must be put away during certain hours, which is challenging since social media and email are running 24 hours a day! Like many working women, Shannon tries to do it all. “I’m constantly reminding myself to focus on the balance between work and home. It helps that Mike and I are in this together!
“It’s a family business,” states Shannon. “But family first! We make sure we take the time for family vacations, to celebrate each other, and be a part of each other’s lives.”
Style in the Community
“Being actively engaged in the community is important to us at Style Encore,” says Shannon, who loves hosting events. “Ladies’ Night Out events have become a favorite at the store. We have hosted events working with local groups that offer free mammograms and awareness of heart disease. If a group of ladies has a particular charity that is important to them, we can donate a portion of the sales to that cause or offer a percentage off in their shopping.”
Style Encore is committed to making women the priority, including supporting causes that are important to women. “With events throughout the year, we encourage our shoppers to follow us on Facebook or visit our website to stay up to date on what is coming up!”
This is a unique business model that has quickly gained popularity within the Triad. Great fashions at a fraction of the cost and cash on the spot? It’s no wonder that in less than two years’ time, Style Encore is already a local favorite.
