Style File: What to Wear at Your Next Holiday Party

BY MADISON SKAKLE

It’s officially November and that means the holiday season is upon us! The holidays bring lots of fun gatherings and parties with family and friends. While those can be really enjoyable, sometimes finding the right outfit to wear to those parties can be a challenge. Check out my tips below to help you arrive in style!

Your Family’s Thanksgiving Dinner

Comfort is key when it comes to Thanksgiving dinner. I have made the mistake of wearing a form fitted dress to a Thanksgiving dinner and immediately regretted it on my third serving of my mom’s famous oyster dressing. Make sure you choose something that is comfortable and has plenty of room if you eat too much (which I always do). My family is usually pretty casual for their Thanksgiving dinners, so I will choose an A-line dress, shift dress or trapeze dress to wear with cute boots. If it’s cold, add some tights and you will be good to go.

Fall Festival

If you haven’t been to a fall festival, you are missing out. These are typically a Southern tradition and involve BBQ, a corn maize, apple cider, pumpkins, hay rides and cowboy boots. Choose something comfortable that you are able to walk in all day. I love to pair a plaid button down with skinny jeans and cowboy boots. If it’s chilly outside, add a scarf or military jacket. You’re ready for your fall frolic!

A Holiday Cookie Exchange

Cookie exchanges are definitely my favorite parties! What’s not to love: cookies and friends?! I usually choose a casual chic outfit to wear. For example, you could choose a pair of dressy jeans with a fun sweater and dazzling flats. I love pairing skinny jeans with a chunky sweater but adding that pizzazz with bold shoes. The holidays are about sparkle and fun, so add that fun in your shoes or accessories.

Your Christmas Work Party

This is a very general party and completely depends on the location of the party. If you’re going to a more formal restaurant, you need to choose something dressier such as a dress with heels. If you’re going over to your boss’s house for a potluck celebration, you can wear nice jeans and a nice blouse. I think an outfit that is always safe during the holiday season is a sweater dress with boots. You can dress it up with more accessories and heels or keep it casual with more casual boots.

A Holiday Cocktail Party

Cocktail parties around the holidays can be tons of fun because….hello, signature cocktails and delicious appetizers! Your wardrobe at this cocktail party depends on the venue but I’m a believer of the rule that it’s always better to be overdressed than underdressed. In general, a cocktail party is a bit dressier than a day-time party. This is the time when I get out my holiday cocktail dress and strappy heels. When else do you get to wear those fancy clothes in your closet? Bring them out and rock them at your next cocktail party!

Christmas Morning Brunch

My family likes to have smoked salmon and mimosas while we are opening up gifts. We consider it out little Christmas tradition and I love it! I usually wear jeans with heels and a fun sweater. On Christmas, it’s always good to wear the jewels and bring out that statement earring!

Here’s the key to any wardrobe you choose for a party: choose what makes you feel your very best. If you feel beautiful, then wear that outfit with confidence and you will be dazzling!
