As you stroll the streets of Winston-Salem, NC, whether you were born and raised here or just passing through, you get a sense of a city steeped in a vibrant culture of the arts and of rich history. Part of the beauty and charm is the beautiful old buildings which once housed the backbone of the area, tobacco and textiles. One of the historical landmarks is The Historic Brookstown Inn, on the National Register of Historic Places, built in 1837, which was once the Salem Cotton Mill and later was retooled into Wachovia Flour Mill. Now it is a beautiful hotel with 70 rooms, each with its own unique features. Setting The Historic Brookstown Inn apart are 30 multi-level suites, ranging from 600-900 square feet. “There truly is no property like this in Winston-Salem. The Historic Brookstown Inn offers our guests a very unique historic setting in a building dating back to 1837. We recently completed more than $600,000 in renovations to improve the quality of our guests’ stays and maintain the building’s old world architecture. The history wall in the lobby documents our history from the very beginning, and throughout the hotel is art from local artists. We are a living history and art museum all within the handmade brick walls of the Inn,” said Dana Bryson, co-owner of The Historic Brookstown Inn. But the history of the building is just the beginning of what awaits guests with their stay …..
A Home Away from Home
Guests of The Historic Brookstown Inn are greeted with upgraded amenities in the rooms, as well as in the setting of the hotel. “Every evening we offer a wine and cheese reception featuring wines from local North Carolina vineyards,” commented Dana. “We also have delicious homemade cookies with milk at bedtime, and a complimentary hot breakfast buffet. Our guest rooms are oversized, full of history and charm, with antique furniture and reproductions designed by our early American craftsman. Part of our renovations included the addition of granite counter tops, marble showers, Sealy Posturepedic mattresses, luxurious bedding packages with 400 thread count sheets, 32 inch flat screen televisions and Keurig coffeemakers.” The hotel features the Grand Ballroom that can accommodate up to 175 people, as well as Winston, Salem and Piedmont Rooms, The Breakfast Room, Parlor and the Brookstown Courtyard are perfect spots for an intimate reception or private gathering.
“Our unique Brookstown Courtyard is a showpiece in itself; a venue for weddings, business meetings and a wonderful place for friends to gather, relax and enjoy the surroundings. No matter the season, the courtyard is beautiful and has a feeling of being in someone’s garden with a canopy of trees overhead. We also have a house cat named ‘Sally’ who is usually welcoming our guests in the courtyard”, said Dana. With her over 17 years in the hospitality industry, and being the co-owner of Village Inn Even Center in Clemmons, NC, Dana Bryson knows that amenities are a draw for guests, but what keeps guests returning is the customer service the staff at The Historic Brookstown Inn provides.
“The genuine hospitality of the staff lets guests know that their needs will be met and exceeded and that their comfort is our priority,” said Dana. Two members of the staff who are integral to the everyday attention to our guests’ comfort are Steve Lawson, General Manager, and Allison Southard, Director of Sales. “I was born and raised in Winston-Salem, and have been in the hospitality industry for 33 years in the city,” said Steve Lawson. “I started my career at the Hyatt Winston-Salem as a server and worked my way up to Sales Director before becoming the Food and Beverage Director for Adams Mark (now the Twin City Quarter). I have been involved in all 15 Vantage Championships for RJ Reynolds, as well as every Crosby Golf Tournament, then working at Tanglewood Park until 2009 as the Food and Beverage Director. I have been at The Historic Brookstown Inn for the past four years and find it rewarding seeing our guests enjoy all that we have to offer.” Allison Southard is also a native of Winston-Salem, a graduate of ECU with a bachelor’s degree in Hospitality Management. She has also been with the hotel for four years as the Director of Sales.
